The reach of fundamental media

Spent an enjoyable evening, watching a production of theatre group, 'Gonokrishti', called, "Wine Flu" at The Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata. Previously, I have watched, director, Amitava Dutta 's other brilliant productions like, "Toshkor Brittanto", "Ekhon Antigone", "Kemon Achhen" and have been entralled by them.
I have never been a theatre-person, per se, was always a movie buff and was sucked into the passion of amateur theatre, only at the insistence of Amitava da, and mighty glad I am that his perseverence paid off and he converted another new viewer. This is how painfully, each viewer is contrived, as this media, lacking in funds, can never spend much on publicity or post production. So they compensate it with fervour and zeal.

As I started getting involved with theatre, I discovered a rich media, capable of connecting with the raw emotions of viewers at a primordial level, a media, born only out of passion inorder to spread some sort of social message, a media, which never expects, 'business' out of their showmanship, out of their acting prowess. Here were actors, from all walks of life, taking time out of their professional and personal life to rehearse and then to stage a production, and at times even contributing themselves to make their meagre ends meet, even for basic facilities like stage, sound, light etc.

"Wine Flu" is a political satire, based on the present sorry state of political affairs of our very sorry state. Please overlook the pun friends, but I urge you to please spend a quarter of what we spend on multiplex glitz and glamour, to go out and watch theatre. You maybe deprived of the magnetism of the razzle-dazzle, but I can vouch, that you will be one satisfied viewer, after watching one such production, totally relating with elemental realism, outside the realm of surrealism.
