Rumination - 9 The Elixir of Youth

Do we ever wonder, why we keep craving to go back to our childhood? Because of the simple way of life, the innocence, the ability to trust and to be able to think of a spade as a spade.  Another aspect of childhood that we lose with age is the wonder….the sparkle in the eye the unadulterated happiness even with receiving anything small and the passion to do something.

Wonder, I feel is associated with innocence, with simplicity. Amazement is a quality that not only stimulates our senses, our intellect and urges us to be curious and to know more, and consequently, grow more,  in addition it is also infectious enough to stimulate people around you in a positive way.
With age, with experience, we lose this capability of amazement, of wonder, of wide-eyedness. We stop, wanting to explore, to know. This is the beginning of ageing, not from the perspective of years, but from the perspective of how we look at life.

How often do I feel amazed, grow curious, guffaw loudly, and yield to my urge of forgetting a fight and dropping at my friend’s place without a call, at this middle age, when I am supposed to have grown wiser than before. Isn’t happiness associated with all these things??

Time to wonder, time to ponder

  2. Perhaps, the accomplishment of any writer, lies in being able to touch the innermost-being of the reader, and to make the reader relate to the thoughts of the writer. This is no mean achievement, and your encouragement will surely make me strive harder to better myself.

  3. I agree with every word of the piece. Innocence and simplicity are two natural gifts we are born with but they sneak out before we understand their true worth. Perhaps this explains our subsequent ‘craving to go back to our childhood’ and look for the lost gifts.

  5. Nice piece. Truly, it is the sense of wonder that keeps us young. Diane Ackerman is a science writer, she once wrote - Wonder is the heaviest element in the periodic table. Even a tiny speck of it can stop time! I love it so much! Thank you Jayeeta. --Judhajit Dasgupta
